Please introduce yourselves: What does your start-up do?

At Karl Karlo, it is our goal to create the snacks for long-lasting energy. Our Organic Energy Balls solve two main problems.

First, availability. For professionals in the German-speaking countries, healthy snacks are difficult to come by. Vending machines are often the sole source of snacks at work. Those vending machines aren’t necessarily stacked with healthy products. To be precise, they don’t have any. And that’s actually similar in supermarkets, mostly dominated by major brands.

Second, getting through the energy slump. Energy Balls help to cure the hunger craving between the lunch break and the end of the workday. They make snacking without remorse possible thanks to organic and vegan ingredients with no additives or industrial sugars.



How did you come up with an idea and concept? What inspired and motivated you to create this product?

We have been best friends since high school and contemplated of starting a company together for quite a few years. We’ve founded Karl Karlo because we actually encountered a problem. While working in the same office but for different companies, we couldn’t find the right snack for us: a snack combining long-lasting energy and sustainability while also tasting great.

What is unique about your business idea and operating model?

With our Organic Energy Balls available in various flavours we’ve created tasty and healthy products in attractive packaging that can be easily consumed on the go.

What were the most significant difficulties you had to overcome while building your start-up?

Being bootstrapped. The less than optimal cash-to-cash business model of selling a physical product really is a challenge.

Where do you see yourselves and your company in 5 years?

Still creating an organic, sustainable, and healthy snack empire!

What are your expectations from the NX-FOOD programme?

Our best-case scenario would be for our Organic Energy Balls to become a regular product within Eurowings’ Wings Bistro, to raise awareness for our products and get listed at other airlines.

What are your main milestones and achievements?

March 2018: Foundation of Karl Karlo
March 2018: Launch of first products & first sales
May 2018: First supermarket listings
June 2018: Selected for Eurowings’ & NX-FOOD’s Wings Bistro
