Please introduce yourselves: What does your start-up do?
The sad reality:
There are simply no tasty and savoury snack alternatives to protein shakes & co. If you are a sausage lover looking for a snack to go, you will usually only find a classic mini salami with a lot of saturated fat and an extremely long list of additives.
We want to stir up the fitness and sausage markets and provide customers with an alternative that was previously missing. We work exclusively with local butchers and can thus guarantee top German quality. Our production facility is only 20 km away from our offices as regionality is particularly important to us. No mass production, every sausage is unique!
Powerwurst = taste
We keep the amount of salt as low as possible and pay attention to the finest combinations of spices. Because honestly: who likes the products that have a good nutritional value but taste like cardboard? The berwork. fitness sausage is strong as an ox and has four delicious flavours: pepper, paprika, herbs & jalapeño!
How did you come up with an idea and concept? What inspired and motivated you to create this product?
We are tired of the ubiquitous protein shakes & bars! When we were looking for a savoury high-protein alternative about 18 months ago, there was nothing on the market. So we did it ourselves: sat down with regional butchers and created an absolute power sausage. Our berwork. fitness sausage is made of the best German beef and has 47% protein with only 6% fat!
We have spent quite some savings to found our company and develop berwork. products. That’s how we made Powerwurst a part of our lives. We are convinced that we can establish a top quality product in the food sector.
What is unique about your business idea and operating model?
Our product is unique: nothing on the market can compete with berwork. in terms of taste, nutritional values and quality, as we have invested almost 2 years into its development.
Of course, our customer’s opinion is crucial when it comes to taste, which is why we have always sought the most diverse flavours to make sure there is an option for everyone.
What were the most significant difficulties you had to overcome while building your start-up?
One of the biggest challenges was finding a production partner. Our innovative idea required professional support from the sausage industry and it has been particularly important for us to have a factory on our side. Our product had to be made from the best ingredients, produced in Germany and be easily scalable. This was the only way we could personally check and guarantee the quality on a permanent basis.
Where do you see yourselves and your company in 5 years?
In 5 years berwork. will be a well-known lifestyle brand available throughout Germany and Europe in fitness studios and food stores, restaurants and hotels, as well as at the petrol stations, snack points and convenience shops. Thanks to the innovation factor and the unique selling points, berwork. has a potential to achieve these ambitious goals within the next 5 years.
What are your expectations from the NX-FOOD Start-up Shelf programme?
From the NX-FOOD programme, we expect the first major entry into the wholesale sector: gastronomy, hotels, petrol stations etc. We want to show that our Powerwurst is not only an excellent on-the-go snack but can also be used in a restaurant dish.
The best-case scenario would be a successful cooperation for the next 3 months with a subsequent permanent listing at the Metro Cash & Carry Germany and real,- stores. It would be great to get listed on the Eurowings flights as well to see which feedback our Powerwurst gets at an altitude of 10,000 metres.
We hope to convince NX-FOOD in the potential that we as founders see in this product. We are also open to the discussions with potential investors because, in the long run, you need strong partners who will help you grow and scale further.
