Please introduce yourself: What does your start-up do?
In our Berlin-based snack manufactory, we use fruit and vegetables which, due to the smallest aesthetic defects, are no longer suitable for sale and are often thrown away in large amounts. As we find every fruit and vegetable beautiful, we buy those with little imperfections directly from the farmers or wholesalers at fair prices and process them manually to create delicious additive-free dried snacks.
How did you come up with an idea and concept? What inspired and motivated you to create this product?
We believe that you can work sustainably yet still be profitable. Our goal is to make a small but growing contribution to the fight against food waste and set up a successful business that takes its place amidst all the major players in the food industry — a company that appreciates the value of food and craftsmanship.
What is unique about your business idea and operating model?
Our mission to make snacks from saved food helps us differentiate ourselves from our competitors. In doing so, we avoid the price war, which is particularly pronounced in the German food trade.
What were the most significant difficulties you had to overcome while building your start-up?
The biggest challenge was to build our own production line for a completely new product category, the fruit paper.
Where do you see yourselves and your company in 5 years?
In the coming years, we want to further expand our sustainability commitments and set up a fund that directly invests into the projects against food waste.
What are your expectations from the NX-FOOD Start-up Shelf programme?
We would like to get a permanent listing at Eurowings in order to establish a lasting business relationship with LSG. Further support from NX-FOOD would also be great!
What are your main milestones and achievements?
We are particularly proud of the federal award “Zu gut für die Tonne” (Too good for the bin), which we received in 2017 for our commitment to fight the food waste.
