The earth’s population will increase from 7 billion to a projected 9.8 billion by 2050, and nearly 80 percent of us will live in urban centers by then. The overall demand for food will increase accordingly by more than 50 percent, and demand for animal-based foods by nearly 70 percent. In the end, the process of population growth and urbanization also means global warming and climate change.
So what can we do? Our collective challenge is to manage the change and take a forward-looking approach: We can manage the growth in resource consumption by harnessing what’s right in front of us. Start looking for local resources, stop wasting food. Leverage sustainable agriculture, promote biodiversity, go flexitarian, look for alternative proteins, use eco-friendly packaging.
Furthermore, let us empower consumers with increased education, transparency and information access. About personalized nutrition, functional foods and conscious consumption, providing health and other benefits. Make them aware that consciously using the power of demand can actually have an impact and slow down global warming and climate change. Don´t look at the big overwhelming problems, look at your own yard.
